[size=medium]Viet Nam Moving Closer to Allowing Multiple Citizenships?
The Chairman of the National Assembly has backed an NA Law Committee demand that a section in the citizenship law barring multiple citizenships be retained but made more flexible.
Nguyen Phu Trong told members during the final sitting of the NA Steering Committee’s 12th session Saturday that Section 3 which prescribes a single nationality for every person should not be abolished as desired by the government.
Instead, it should be made flexible to keep abreast of the changing situation.
The Law Committee has already made a similar recommendation.
Minister of Justice Ha Hung Cuong told the media that flexibility would mean people would be allowed to have multiple nationalities.
Thus, overseas Vietnamese who are citizens of other countries may seek Vietnamese nationality without renouncing their existing citizenships.
The Law Committee said, however, they may not be entitled to certain rights like voting and contesting elections.
